Let natural food producers—and their fans—rejoice. The industry has graduated into its tweens—judging from this Wall Street Journal story, discussing the emergence of natural food into a new era: one where consumers are carefully distinguishing between non-GMO foods vs. organic.
According to the Journal, non-GMO wins handily—at least in the U.S. Labeled non-GMO foods are outpacing their labeled organic counterparts. Non-GMO sales have been rising roughly 70% since 2013, and are expected to top $13 billion this year: showcasing a preference and priority that we at Nanoosh regret may be displaced.
The writer explores whether health food buzzwords have misled consumers. Let us be clear: we’re fully in support of non-GMO foods. In fact, they’re all over our menu. But there’s a good reason why organic is the superior natural food choice to non-GMO or locally grown ingredients.
Organic vs. Non-GMO foods: The Facts
When it comes to organic vs. non-GMO foods, the difference is simple—and vast.
Organic food producers follow a strict set of government regulations to achieve their coveted organic seal. These regulations prohibit genetically modified ingredients—or GMOs—in any certified organic product. By this definition, organic food is inherently free of GMOs.
Non-GMO foods, on the other hand, are just that: foods that lack genetically modified organisms. This does not include synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and countless other harmful agricultural agents. It also doesn’t consider animal welfare standards, and isn’t strictly regulated by the government the way organic foods are.
The same issue arises with local and artisanal foods. While they support local economies and minimize carbon footprints, they aren’t always made with the same quality of ingredients as organic foods.
The competition for shelf space between these groups is fierce, so it’s important to be educated about what it really is you’re buying.
